The Human Solution Donates Treadmill Desks to COMP-Northwest

Lebanon, Oregon (PRWEB) April 09, 2015

Western University of Health Sciences’ College of Osteopathic Medicine of the Pacific-Northwest recently received a donation of three treadmill desks for students, faculty and staff use at the college.

Donated by The Human Solution, based in Austin, Texas, the treadmill desks are valued at more than ,100.

The treadmill desks offer an opportunity for medical students to get some exercise while continuing to balance their rigorous course load. COMP-Northwest medical students participate in curriculum from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. most days.

COMP-Northwest Chief Wellness Officer Robyn Dreibelbis, DO, has a treadmill desk at home and logs several miles on it every week.

“Thanks to the desk, I get to walk 10 miles a day now,” Dreibelbis said. “I am on this thing all day, and I got to thinking: Why aren’t these things in the medical school?”

Earlier this year, Dreibelbis and Ginger Cupit, a second-year medical student at COMP-Northwest, sent a request to The Human Solution asking for equipment to help students remain physically active.

“You see people’s physical health change when they are in medical school,” Cupit said. “We come in, and most of us were athletes, and then medical school happens and we just stop exercising. All that we want to do is to stop that progression and make it easier to work out.”

The three treadmill desks will be stationed across the COMP-Northwest campus, and students, faculty and staff will be able to sign up for hour-long time slots. A research team plans to collect data on treadmill desk use for a study on physical activity, Dreibelbis said.

The Human Solution is a manufacturer and retailer of ergonomic standing desks and office furniture. Founded in 2002 by certified professional ergonomist Jon Paulsen, the company strives to provide healthy and productive work environments. In addition to the UPLIFT Desk, which is The Human Solution’s featured sit-stand desk, the company offers many options for ergonomic seating, seating alternatives, standing mats, keyboard trays, monitor arms, and more. Medicine World Enterprises, LLC – Stress and Hormones Affect Weight More Than Previously Understood

Medicine World Enterprises, LLC – Stress and Hormones Affect Weight More Than Previously Understood

New York, NY (PRWEB) April 08, 2015

Very few professionals would argue with the proposition that diet and exercise combine to represent the fundamental components of weight management. However, it turns out that two other factors, stress and hormones contribute significantly. They appear to interact and contribute to the ways that most people process food and benefit from exercise. The good news is that both are manageable to a degree that has significant bearing on weight control.

Dr. Veronica Anderson has analyzed data from the Mayo Clinic, Harvard, and other reliable sources. She recognizes that the general categories of food consumption and exercise have multiple subcategories including genetics, hormonal issues, diet quality, sleep, and stress. The public least understands stress and hormones, but they offer everyone the best opportunity to make adjustments.

The way Dr. Veronica describes the connection is that stress is the human body’s natural response to perceived threats. An example she uses is that you suddenly realize your toddler has wandered away from your sight at a park playground. A region of the brain known as the hypothalamus stimulates adrenal glands that release adrenaline and cortisol. The adrenaline raises your heart rate, blood pressure, and energy. It is cortisol, the number one stress hormone, which increases the sugar supply in the bloodstream (leading to weight gain), inhibits the immune system, and suppresses digestion. Other by-products include fear, mood disruptions, and reduced motivation.

In the example, as soon as you notice your child emerge from a play structure, the hormone levels normalize and everything else self regulates once again. However, today’s world has a way of maintaining elevated levels of stress beyond normal parameters. Long-term stress response, even at the relatively low levels we experience in competitive working environments, leads to heart disease, sleep disorders, depression, memory impairment, and weight gain.

Unfortunately, the Affordable Care Act (Obamacare) has increased the problem since it has resulted in a reduction in reimbursements to physicians who deal with these issues. Proactive health care practitioners such as Dr. Veronica advise against taking pills that only mask the symptoms. Rather, she recommends managing stress with her 5 Pillars of Health program that include: 1-Detoxification, 2-Nutrition, 3-Fitness, 4-Nervous System Maintenance, and 5-Hormonal Regulation.

While stress reduction strategies such as meditation, yoga, and other relaxation techniques play a role, Dr. Veronica notes the long-term solutions to uncontrollable weight extend beyond those. She adds, “You cannot just quit your job or get a divorce.” She instructs people that they must learn about the cycle of stress and sustainable methods to break it.

8 Reasons the U.S. Surgeon General Should Announce UV Tanning Causes Skin Cancer

8 Reasons the U.S. Surgeon General Should Announce UV Tanning Causes Skin Cancer

AURORA, Colo. (PRWEB) April 08, 2015

A July 2014 Call to Action to Prevent Skin Cancer by acting Surgeon General Dr. Boris Lushniak points out that indoor tanning is “strongly associated with increased skin cancer risk,” but stops short of reporting that tanning causes cancer. A University of Colorado Cancer Center opinion published today in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine points out that UV tanning meets the same criteria as smoking as a cause of cancer and argues that announcing the causality could save lives.

“In 1964 when the Surgeon General finally reported that smoking causes lung cancer, awareness and policy followed. Smoking rates declined and lung cancer rates have too. It’s time for the Surgeon General to say the same thing about UV tanning,” says Robert P. Dellavalle, MD, PhD, MSPH, investigator at the CU Cancer Center, associate professor of dermatology at the University of Colorado School of Medicine, and the study’s senior author.

There are nine criteria used to determine a causal relationship in disease, developed in the context of smoking and lung cancer in 1965 by British epidemiologist Sir Austin Bradford Hill. Smoking and UV tanning both meet eight of the nine criteria, as follows:

1. Strength of Association

How much more likely is skin cancer in people who have used tanning beds? Numbers vary, but Dellavalle and colleagues point to analyses of large populations of people showing that skin cancer risk is about 16 percent more likely in people who report ever having used a tanning bed. The strength of the association between smoking and lung cancer is even stronger, with smokers being 35 percent more likely than non-smokers to get lung cancer, but in terms of epidemiology, the 16 percent increased risk of skin cancer in ever-users of UV tanning remains strong.

2. Consistency of Association

Dellavalle and colleagues point out that the link between UV tanning and skin cancer isn’t limited to a specific population or nationality. The association is consistent in all studies.

3. Specificity

A cause that leads to many effects is trickier to pin down than a cause that leads to one effect. The one-to-one relationship of UV radiation to skin cancer is long established.

4. Temporality

This may seem obvious, but in order for cause and effect to be true, the cause must happen before the effect. With UV tanning and skin cancer, we see that ever-use of tanning beds precedes increased risk for skin cancer.

5. Biological Gradient

The more an individual smokes, the more likely they are to contract lung cancer. And the more one uses UV tanning beds, the more likely they are to get skin cancer. Specifically, Dellavalle points out that, “Each additional tanning bed session per year confers a 1.8 percent increase in melanoma risk.”

6. Plausibility

Is there a plausible way that UV tanning could cause skin cancer? Sure. UV rays from tanning beds penetrate the skins epidermal layer and may induce DNA alternations that promote the formation of cancer.

7. Coherence

The data of lab experiments and population studies is coherent, meaning that data from both sources point toward a similar conclusion.

8. Experiment

Scientists have used UV radiation to cause skin cancer in animal models. But, just as it is unethical to encourage people to smoke in order to see if smoking causes lung cancer, it is unethical to encourage people to tan in order to see if tanning causes skin cancer. Dellavalle points out that lack of ability to test the effect of UV tanning on cancer in a randomized control trial is “a primary advantage for the tanning industry, which claims that there is lack of true science behind cancer-causing claims.”

9. Analogy

People with skin types that burn easily have higher rates of skin cancer. It’s analogous to tanning as a whole: the more burned someone gets, the higher their risk.

Dellavalle points out that most cancers are seen as the result of random, genetic mutations that unluckily allow cells to act cancerous. “But skin cancer and lung cancer are preventable types of cancer – reduce smoking and you reduce lung cancer; reduce UV exposure and you reduce skin cancer,” he says.

“It’s much easier to help people understand that indoor tanning causes cancer than it is to message something more convoluted about ‘association’,” Dellavalle says. “Tanning beds cause skin cancer. It is time to now more openly announce this causality.”

Dr. Ryan Estes Now Offers Erlanger, KY Residents Gum Recession Correction with Less Invasive Procedure

Dr. Ryan Estes Now Offers Erlanger, KY Residents Gum Recession Correction with Less Invasive Procedure

Erlanger, KY (PRWEB) April 07, 2015

Those looking for a periodontist in Erlanger, KY, for gum recession treatment are now invited to schedule appointments with Dr. Ryan Estes for the new the Chao Pinhole® Surgical Technique (PST™). Dr. Estes is expanding his Florence practice to now offer this minimally invasive procedure to Erlanger residents. PST™ offers a low risk of side effects and complications, such as pain, bleeding and infection. This treatment also helps protect Dr. Estes’ patients against various health complications associated with receding gums.

Dr. Estes does not need to make large incisions, relocate healthy tissue or place sutures when performing PST™. Instead, Dr. Estes simply makes a small pinhole incision in the receding tissue. By reaching through the incision with a specialized tool, Dr. Estes can carefully loosen the gum tissue until he can slide it into a more natural position. Patients are unlikely to experience complications or a slow healing period, due to the less-invasive nature of this procedure. PST™ may especially benefit people who would require multiple gum grafts. The technique allows for the treatment of widespread recession in just one session, minimizing the number of times that patients must visit a periodontist in Erlanger, KY.

Treatment for receding gums may be seen as a cosmetic procedure, but Dr. Estes reminds patients that various negative health consequences are associated with gum recession. By exposing more of the teeth, recession can raise the risk of infection and decay. Teeth may also become more mobile or loose as support from surrounding gum tissue decreases. Dr. Estes encourages patients to seek treatment to mitigate these risks and determine whether other health issues are responsible for the recession. Gum recession is a common symptom of periodontal disease, which can have various harmful effects, including tooth loss. Recession may also result from tooth misalignment, inadequate oral hygiene or tooth clenching and grinding. Dr. Estes can determine whether patients need treatment for any of these underlying issues, and he can help patients evaluate whether PST™ is the best option for correcting the recession.

The symptoms of gum recession can vary. People with receding gums may notice changes in the appearance of their smiles, gumline or apparent tooth length. Sensations of tooth sensitivity or looseness can also be warning signs. Dr. Estes encourages patients who notice any of these signs to protect their health by scheduling consultations. People who need to see a periodontist in Erlanger, KY, can call Dr. Estes’ office or visit his website to set up their appointments.

Skinspirations Debuts CoolSculpting Service to Meet Rising Demand for Nonsurgical Fat-Reduction Procedures

Skinspirations Debuts CoolSculpting Service to Meet Rising Demand for Nonsurgical Fat-Reduction Procedures

Tampa Bay, FL (PRWEB) April 02, 2015

The newest statistics from the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS) reveal non-surgical body contouring treatments are up by 43% in just one year, making last year the first time more than 100,000 treatments were performed in one year since ASAPS started tracking the statistic. (1) Even though non-surgical fat-reduction procedures are on the rise, The Atlantic reports liposuction is down by 41% (2), indicating that as more non-invasive alternatives become available, more patients may be opting for these methods to fight the battle of the bulge. Tampa Bay cosmetic facility Skinspirations has recently added CoolSculpting to their menu of services to meet the demand for non-surgical fat-reduction treatments. While there have been many recent advances in non-invasive fat-reduction technology, CoolSculpting has been deemed the most effective of the fat reduction devices.

CoolSculpting was approved by the Food and Drug Administration in September of 2010, (3) and has already treated over one million patients. (4) The device is unique in that it selectively reduces fat layers in problem areas by using a patented cooling technology. During the clinically proven procedure, a non-invasive applicator delivers precisely controlled cooling to the treatment area in order to induce a natural, controlled elimination of fat cells. Since underlying fat is specifically targeted, surface skin tissue remains unaffected. When fat cells are exposed to extreme cold, a process of natural removal is triggered, which gradually reduces the thickness of the fat layer. Once the fat cells are frozen, they are naturally eliminated from the body and gone for good. As a result, bulges in treated areas of the body are reduced without harming surrounding tissue.

Invasive fat-reduction procedures, such as liposuction, come with risks including infections, internal organ punctures and fat embolism (loosened fat breaking away and becoming trapped in a blood vessel). (5) CoolScuplting does not require surgery or needles, making it a safer alternative to liposuction. Because the delivery of precise cooling affects only targeted fat cells, adjacent tissues are left unharmed and intact. The procedure must be performed in a medical office under the supervision of a physician specializing in cosmetic procedures.

“CoolScultping has only been around for a few years, but already we are seeing a huge increase in the amount of patients receiving it,” says Cynthia Elliott, M.D., owner of Skinspirations. “I’m expecting that we’ll see CoolSculpting become one of the biggest trends in non-surgical procedures.”

CoolSculpting was developed by ZELTQIQ and is based on a process called Cryolipolysis. Cryolipolysis resulted from a discovery by Drs. Dieter Manstein and R. Rox Anderson at the Wellman Center for Photomedicine at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, a teaching affiliate of Harvard Medical School. First published in Lasers in Surgery and Medicine, a peer-reviewed professional journal, their initial work proved that subcutaneous fat cells are naturally more vulnerable to the effects of cold than other surrounding tissue. When exposed to precisely controlled cooling for a sustained period of time, fat cells will undergo a gradual cell death through a process called “induced apoptosis.” (6)

Because CoolSculpting is noninvasive – reported side effects have included temporary numbness, redness, swelling and bruising – patients do not need downtime to recover from the procedure. The procedure lasts one to two hours, and patients can resume daily activities including work and exercise immediately following treatment. After a CoolSculpting treatment, fat cells will self-destruct over several months. On average, each CoolSculpting Procedure results in a 20% reduction of fat in the treated areas, and patients can start to see results as soon as three weeks following the treatment. In most patients, the most dramatic results occur over a period of two to four months.

Colorado Knee Specialist Robert LaPrade, MD, PhD Publishes a New Update on Posterior Cruciate Ligament (PCL) Reconstruction Surgery

Complex Knee and Sports Medicine Specialist Robert LaPrade, MD, PhD.

Vail, Colorado (PRWEB) March 26, 2015

Colorado knee specialist, Robert LaPrade, MD, PhD recently published a review article in the American Journal of Sports Medicine on the “Emerging Updates on the Posterior Cruciate Ligament.” This clinical sports medicine update presents a thorough review on up-to-date knowledge on the anatomy, epidemiology, biomechanical function, diagnosis and current treatments for a PCL injury. The emphasis of this study is on emerging clinical and biomechanical evidence regarding the current treatment choices for PCL reconstruction surgery.

The PCL is composed of 2 bundles, the larger anterolateral bundle (ALB) and the smaller posteromedial bundle (PMB). A posterior cruciate ligament tear rarely exists in isolation. Typically, PCL injuries occur with anterior cruciate ligament (ACL), medial collateral ligament (MCL), or posterolateral corner (PLC) injury. The most common PCL injury originates from sports or trauma, most commonly motor vehicles or road traffic accidents. Obtaining an accurate diagnosis between an isolated versus a combined PCL tear is essential for long-term knee health and stability.

The complexity of the PCL has generated controversy over the recommended treatment after injury. Historically, non-operative treatment was favored for an isolated PCL injury due to poorer outcomes postoperatively compared with anterior cruciate ligament reconstructions. Today, advancements in the operative treatment of this type of injury have made surgical intervention increasingly popular and successful for isolated and combined PCL injuries.

PCL reconstruction surgery depends upon whether the injury is acute or chronic. Acute multi-ligament knee injuries with a concomitant or chronic PCL tears are believed to be best treated by surgery. Today, there are two PCL reconstruction surgery techniques, the single-bundle and double-bundle PCL reconstruction techniques. Single-bundle PCL reconstruction is typically indicated for symptomatic chronic PCL injuries, either in isolation or combined with other knee ligament injuries and for acute, multi-ligament PCL injuries. Double-bundle PCL reconstruction surgery has evolved as an alternative to single-bundle reconstructions with the same indications for surgery.

Currently, peer-reviewed publications are lacking evidence-based level 1 clinical studies comparing the effects of single-bundle and double-bundle PCL reconstructions. However, level 2 and 3 studies have attempted to quantify potential differences between the two techniques. This study concluded that the differences between single-bundle and double-bundle tibial inlay techniques still need to be further evaluated with prospective clinical studies. Recent higher-quality studies indicate that transtibial double-bundle PCL reconstruction surgery may be able to more closely and objectively restore the knee to native levels than transtibial single-bundle reconstructions. “Our clinical and biomechanical studies have demonstrated a clear benefit to double bundle over single bundle PCL reconstructions. We look forward to further research in this area by others using the techniques we have developed because we believe that this will lead to much improved outcomes for patients with PCL tears,” said Dr. LaPrade.

About Dr. LaPrade

As a Colorado knee specialist at The Steadman Clinic in Vail, Colorado Dr. Robert LaPrade is among few complex knee surgeons in the world who specializes in the treatment of PCL injuries. Serving as the Chief Medical Research Officer at the Steadman Philippon Research Institute, Dr. LaPrade has published over a dozen studies on the PCL since 2013 and treated over 500 patients with PCL injuries.

Vascular Graft (Bypass) Market International 2020 Forecasts Analysis

Vascular Graft (Bypass) Market International 2020 Forecasts Analysis

Dallas, Texas (PRWEB) March 26, 2015

Vascular Grafting is a common and popular procedure of surgically implanting a tissue into a body part to replace or compensate a damaged blood vessels. Usually it is preferred that the tissue used is cut out from someone’s own vein as that reduces the risk of infection. Any synthetic implants are highly disposed to thrombosis or clotting, occlusions and infection caused due to protein and cell adsorption and coagulation activation. When such an instance occurs the tissue implanted has to be operated out or replaced immediately. Newer technologies are being developed by using a unique fibrous composite structure to create small diameter vascular grafts so that implementation of such vascular grafts can curtail the risk of redoing the surgery.

To know further on vascular graft market analysis one can refer to the report ( It provides a complete analysis of the market, industry chain structure and industry overview, policy analysis, news analysis, etc. As a part of the industry chain analysis the report details out the upstream raw materials of Vascular Graft, equipments, client survey, various marketing channels available, proposals and various other related inputs for the buyer. For the technical data part the report analyzes Vascular Graft leading suppliers on capacity, commercial production, manufacturing plants distribution, R&D status, technology sources, and raw materials sources. Some of the important manufacturers covered in this report are- Atrium Medical Corporation, Bard Peripheral vascular, Inc, Vascutek Limited, W. L. Gore, Terumo, Maquet, Junken Medical and Shanghai Suokang. There is a complete profiling of each of this manufacturers along with their production capacity and a cost-price value analysis of the production process. It includes the company’s product offerings along with the specifications. Also key contact information in the company.

Presently there is lot of demand for vascular grafting due to lack of alternatives. It is used widely by the people suffering from diabetes and cardiovascular diseases especially by paitents undergoing dialysis as most of the patients need a synthetic vascular grafts to get access to the arteries for the dialysis process. There is very little competition in this market from other products as there are nearly no alternative available. However there is significant competition among the suppliers for the basic synthetic materials, including PTFE.

But there is immense competition among the manufacturers across the globe for getting a share in the market especially in the US. End-consumers have almost no role to play in the product selection. It is usually the surgeon who selects the product. Thus the marketing team of the manufacturing companies should devise a good promotion plan to target the doctors and specialists in this field. However the market prediction is that the need for vascular grafts will declines as soon as there are non-surgical alternatives such as medicines or other invasive techniques available in the market.

The report deals with analysis of different markets with a special focus on the Chinese market. It outlines various products available, industry trends and countries in which there is a need for the product. Towards the end the report there is a SWOT analysis of the on-going projects, a feasibility check for the investors to understand the risk and rewards on entering and investing in this market, investment return analysis, and development trend analysis.
