Why are vitamin mineral supplements essential?

Why are vitamin mineral supplements essential?

Some people think that getting over-the-counter supplements like Vitamin C and Vitamin E are enough for daily living.  But besides the guarantees given by these vitamins, it is better if you consider mineral supplements with it instead.  Yes, there is a difference between taking vitamins alone than when you consider an intake of vitamin mineral supplements.  The terms may be somewhat confusing so before proceeding to the essence of taking vitamins and minerals all together, it is best to define these two terms.

Vitamins are defined as organic substances that are essential to nutrition.  They can be taken in small quantities and are often found in the food you eat.  Some vitamins are also produced by the body but the most popular vitamins you may know of are those that can be bought from drugstores.  From these features of vitamins, you may now see why it is best to have vitamin mineral supplements than vitamins alone.  To convince you further, take a look at what minerals are all about.

Minerals, on the other hand are inorganic substances coming from nature.  These are generally described as those that we can derive from rocks or from the ground.  As a nutritive substance, it is also inorganic and does not come from plant or animals.  Minerals may be used up by people and other forms of living things.  Human beings should take mineral supplements to make sure that the requirement of over 80 minerals in the body will be complied with.  With this, you are now ready to look into the essence of vitamin mineral supplements.

Vitamins and minerals are two terms that are often interchanged.  As defined above, vitamins are organic substances while minerals are inorganic.  The importance of taking vitamin mineral supplements extends to the fact that you need something that will form your bones and compose your body fluids.  Mineral supplements should be considered as a great help in order for all your body’s systems to function properly – from the digestive system and cardiovascular system to the more general immune system.

Vitamin mineral supplements are not created just for manufacturers to derive income from the sale of such products.  Some of the service providers out there look into the necessity of mineral supplements in daily diet that is why they are created.  Think of the depleted soil where fruits and vegetables grow and you will realize that vital nutrients have already been removed.  Imagine the many processes that the so-called natural products go through and you will surely be convinced of the need to incorporate these supplements in your diet.

Before you ever doubt the honesty of manufacturers who sell mineral supplements in the market, try to give more scrutiny to the benefits you will derive from such products.  You should look at things positively and you will happen to realize that vitamin mineral supplements work hand-in-hand with your choice of a healthy diet.  If you do not want to waste your money,  always go for reputable manufacturers out there.  Truth is that there are already a lot of huge names in this industry that you may consider including on your list.

If you are looking for mineral supplements, our site is ready to help you. We guarantee you that our vitamin mineral supplements will render your daily requirement.

Drugs, Vitamins, Minerals and Supplements

Many people nowadays are turning to “organics” and “naturals” otherwise known as herbals. The rising popularity of herbal supplements has created a new fad if not a new health lifestyle. But before you join the bandwagon, here are some things you need to know about this mean, “green” dietary supplementing machine.

What are vitamins, minerals, supplements and drugs?

DRUGS are chemicals that can prevent, prolong the life, treat other effects of a health condition, improve the quality of life, and/or cure ailments and diseases, or alter the function of any part or chemicals inside the body. These drugs have approved therapeutic claims.

VITAMINS are natural substances found in living things such as plants. Vitamins must be obtained in the body from foods or supplements as they cannot usually be produced by the body.

MINERALS are found in plants. Plants get their minerals from the soil ‘ soil gets minerals from water washing over rocks. For vitamins to do their job, they require minerals. Minerals must also be obtained from food or supplements.

SUPPLEMENTS are vitamins and minerals that have been extracted from a plant or created in a laboratory and put into a form that can be ingested and used by the body. They are effective supplements, ineffective supplements and hazardous supplements. Herbal supplements are not classified as drugs but as dietary supplements.

Most of the manufactured medicines we now have once came from animals and plants. Through the years, chemists isolated the life-saving or life-curing components and separated them from the harmful ones. This lead to the further drug research and drug development that lead to the production of a different variety of drugs for many ailments and conditions from synthetic sources. But still we have semi-synthetic drugs, as well as drug that more or less approximate more natural composition. Since herbal supplements are made from a mixture of crude herbs reduced into powder or gel form, and later on packaged as tablets and capsules, there is a possibility that life-threatening or at least body chemistry-altering components are still present, thus the expression of concern from the medical community.

Vitamins and minerals go from your stomach to your intestines. They then go through a very complex allocation system whereby the body distributes certain vitamins and minerals to parts of your body based on its own priority system.

If a nutrient is needed in a certain organ that if (the body) deems more important, it will take the nutrient from a less important organ, and allocate it to a more important organ. Sort of a “rob Peter to pay Paul” action. That’s why it is critical to maintain proper vitamin & mineral levels.

Vitamins and minerals in your body should not be viewed as independent substances, but rather as a cooperative network of nutrients working together. If one nutrient is missing, it throws the entire network of nutrients out of balance.

In his book Prescription for Nutritional Healing, James F. Balch says: “A deficiency of a vitamin or mineral will cause a body part to malfunction and eventually break down ‘ and, like dominos, other body parts will follow.”

What do Vitamins and Minerals Do for You?

Illness and disease are not “caught.” One doesn’t catch cancer, heart disease or a cold. You create these ailments with deficiencies based on what you eat or don’t eat.

Vitamins & minerals are involved in the release of energy from digested foods. Strong, lasting energy levels are good indicators of healthy vitamin and mineral intake.

Skin clearness, tone, and elasticity; hair strength, thickness and color; fingernail strength, color and texture all depend on vitamins and minerals. Some people don’t look 50 years old at 30. Some look 30 at 50.

Brain function, ability to concentrate and memory require proper vitamin and mineral levels.

Is there a growing concern with the use of herbal supplements?

Yes. With the rising popularity of using and consuming anything herbal or organic is the proliferation of fake herbal supplements that threaten to endanger lives. If that’s the case, then why are herbal supplements given drug administration approvals? One way of ensuring the safety of the people is to have all candidate drugs, food, drinks, and dietary supplements registered with the proper authority. Otherwise, they would pose more risk with these things being sold in the black market for a hefty sum. We could ensure the quality and safety of herbal supplements if they get proper classification with the food and drug administration. Moreover, people may be able to file the proper complaints in the event a worsening of health condition is proven to be linked to the use of a particular herbal supplement.

Is using herbal supplements worth the risk?

Yes. It cannot be discounted that many who have tried herbal supplements experienced an improvement in their health

Synthetic Vs. Natural Vitamin Supplements: Which Is Better?

Synthetic Vs. Natural Vitamin Supplements: Which Is Better?

Vitamins are organic compounds that help in the body’s metabolism and maintenance. Vitamins can be absorbed from numerous food sources, but are especially abundant in fruits and vegetables. However, there may still be nutrients that your body will not be able to absorb, or that you may not be getting enough of from your diet. This is why vitamin supplements are important.

There are 12 essential vitamins that our body needs to function effectively. These include Vitamins A, B1, B2, B3, B5, B6, B12, C, D, E, K and folate. These vitamins have been shown to protect the body from certain illnesses, including heart disease and cancer. Lack of vitamins in the body can result in various diseases, including blindness, anemia, birth defects, bleeding disorders and bone deformities, among others. Vitamin supplements provide your body with the recommended daily amounts of essential vitamins, and help prevent the development of these diseases.

Nowadays, numerous vitamin supplements exist, available in different forms. Vitamin supplements are available in all health stores and can also be ordered online. These vitamin supplements can generally be divided into two categories: natural and synthetic. At present, there is a continuing debate regarding which kind of supplement is more beneficial to the body.

Natural vitamin supplements are vitamins extracted from natural food products and processed to create a food supplement. Meanwhile, synthetic vitamin supplements are man-made vitamins chemically processed in a laboratory.

Research has been leaning more towards natural vitamin supplements as the more beneficial product between the two categories. Studies on synthetic vitamin supplements have resulted in mixed results. Some scientists believe that taking synthetic vitamin supplements could result in numerous side effects, especially when the vitamins are taken in large amounts. This is because synthetic vitamin supplements contain numerous chemicals, which could react adversely with your body. Just as lack of vitamins results in various diseases, excessive intake of vitamins have also been known to cause a myriad of toxicities, including hypersensitivity reactions, diarrhea and bone damage, to name a few.

Recent studies have also shown that natural vitamins are better absorbed and processed by the body than their synthetic counterparts. This allows you to get the most out of your supplements, ensuring that you have adequate vitamin levels in your body.

Since natural vitamin supplements appear to be the better choice, it is best for you to find a natural supplement that can provide all these benefits.

When choosing a natural vitamin supplement, make sure that the supplement contains all 12 essential vitamins. Also, check that the supplement is really natural. Some synthetic products manipulate their advertising to make it appear that the product is natural, when in fact, it isn’t. Look closely into the ingredients used in the product, and research on them. Take advantage of some websites that allows you to check up on these supplements and their contents. Finally, before taking any natural vitamin supplements, it is best to consult a qualified nutritionist or your physician first.

Don’t forget that no vitamin supplement can replace a healthy, balanced diet. It is recommended that you eat a vitamin-rich diet, which can be achieved by increasing your intake of vegetables and fruits. A healthy diet, complemented by a high-quality natural vitamin supplement, can ultimately give you a stronger body and help you live a longer life.

ABSTRACT: Vitamin supplements are necessary to keep your body healthy. Natural vitamin supplements can provide you with adequate amounts of vitamins needed in your diet, without the side effects associated with its synthetic counterpart.

5 Reasons Why You Should Take Vitamin, Mineral And Antioxidant Supplements

5 Reasons Why You Should Take Vitamin, Mineral And Antioxidant Supplements

There is a vitamin, mineral and antioxidant supplement store in almost every shopping mall in the United States. We can also find vitamin, mineral and antioxidant supplement shelves in almost every super market. More and more people are taking food supplements today.

But there are quite a few people who still refuse to take vitamin, mineral and antioxidant supplements. They think that their diet is good enough and that they do not need to take any supplements. Theoretically what they are saying may be true, but in reality it is not possible to obtain all your nutritional needs from just the food you consume.

Here are 5 reasons why vitamin, mineral and antioxidant supplements are necessary in our daily life:

1. Eating a healthy and well-balanced diet every day is a difficult task.
The USDA Food Consumption Survey discovered that only 3 % of those surveyed actually ate healthful and balanced diets. And no one met the RDA (Recommended Dietary Allowances – which are set by the U. S. government about daily intakes.) consumption of vitamins and minerals.

2. The food you eat now does not contain the same amount of nutrition as it did in the past.
The nutrients in a soil have been exhausted over the years and the vegetables and fruits grown on the farm have been loosing its nutritious values. Therefore, the same amount of broccoli, for instance, contains less calcium and vitamin C than it did 50 years ago.

3. The over processed and preservative added food removes important nutrients.
Consuming even a very good diet is not sufficient if most of the nutrients, vitamins and minerals in our food are diminished by over processing and adding preservatives.

4. The RDA is only the lowest level of nutrient intakes that will prevent deficiencies in apparently healthy human beings.
The RDA was developed originally to help people reduce the rates of contracting severe nutritional deficiencies, like scurvy, rickets, beriberi and so forth which are rarely seen in our modern world. Instead, what we should be concerned with in this industrialized world are the degenerative diseases, such as heart disease, cancer, stroke, diabetes, osteoporosis and so forth. In order to prevent the degenerative diseases, we need to consume every day the optimal level of nutrients, beyond the RDA recommended level.

5. Complete nutritional intake is necessary for optimal health.
Using scientifically researched, complete and balanced, and quality nutritional supplements assures the necessary dietary intake for optimal health.

Choosing the quality vitamin, mineral and antioxidant supplements with safety, balance, completeness and potency in mind will help apparently healthy people stay healthy while lowering the provability of contracting degenerative diseases and enjoying a healthier and longer life.

Vitamins, Minerals and Supplements are the Key to a Healthy Life

Vitamins, Minerals and Supplements are the Key to a Healthy Life

The discovery of vitamins as essential balance of the body is relatively recent. We owe our merit especially to the Japanese Umetaro Suzuki who discovered in 1910 vitamin B1 (thiamine) in the hull of a grain of rice. In the early 20th century, we still did not understand very well what role they could play in the organization of the human body. Today, scientists recognize the importance of dietary supplements in the prevention of heart disease, asthma, cancer, memory disorder, premature aging and in many other medical conditions. The following are some of vital supplement that our body needs to function properly, according to several researches on nutrition:

What supplements you should take?

Antioxidants have aroused much enthusiasm – These nutrients protect the body from damage due to “free radicals”, compounds produced by toxins from the environment and the normal mechanisms of the body. Free radicals can damage cells throughout the body. Now days, all medical researchers confirm the benefits of antioxidants on our health, including protection against heart disease, cancer and Alzheimer’s disease. Vitamins C and E, beta-carotene (vitamin A) and selenium are antioxidants on which scientists conduct numerous searches.

Vitamins – The vitamins are absolutely necessary to our body even in small quantities. Besides, with the exception of vitamin D, vitamins can not be synthesized by the body and must be present in our daily food or taking in supplements! We mainly use the range of B vitamins (B1, B2, B3, B5, B6, B9 and B12), vitamin C and vitamin E, without forgetting the vitamin A and vitamin D. In short, when it comes to vitamins, all are useful and indispensable to good functioning of our organism. A lack vitamins may cause more diseases one can imagine.

Minerals and oligoelements

As for minerals, selenium and magnesium are the top supplements you should consider increase in your diet. Selenium for its huge anti-oxidant properties and the other (magnesium) for its ability to restore energy and morale. In addition, you need many of these small molecules (oligo-element) used in the composition of dietary supplements: calcium, carotene, chromium, copper or iron, each has its role in the beauty of the skin, the strength of our bones or well-being of your joints. Without forgetting the fluorine for the smallest and largest, or zinc for a perfect.

The protein, fatty acids, and amino acids

More original, compositions based fatty acid such as the famous omega 3 from fish oil or vegetable oils, are known for their positive action on mood and heart. There is the CLA (conjugated linoleic acid), which “dry” muscles by preventing fat set but also all kinds of protein and fatty acids. Among the amino acids, creatine evokes discussion. Its role to supply energy to muscle and nerve cells is sometimes controversial. Many researches have shown the outstanding role of Fatty acids in our organism. The list of proteins, amino acids and fatty acids and their role is long, I promise to talk about them in another article.

Nature provides us with everything we need for a healthy life. The vitamins, minerals, and certain herbs all around us can help us have healthy skin, clean bodies, and prevent or even cure diseases that are said to be incurable. However, taking those supplements in a daily basic in a regular food is not as easy as it sounds. You need to supplement your food with healthy vitamin supplements. ConsumerLab.com Finds Quality Problems with Nearly 30% of Fish Oil Supplements Reviewed (Including Krill and Algal Oil Supplements)

White Plains, NY (PRWEB) September 28, 2010

Tests of fish, algal and krill oil supplements revealed quality problems with 7 out of 24 products selected by independent testing organization ConsumerLab.com. Three products contained less of the omega-3 fatty acids EPA and/or DHA than claimed, spoilage was detected in one of these products as well as in two others (including a children’s supplement), an enteric-coated product released its ingredients too early, and a supplement for pets exceeded the contamination limit for PCBs. Seventeen other products passed testing as did 15 products similarly tested through ConsumerLab.com’s voluntary certification program. ConsumerLab.com’s report is now available online to its members.

ConsumerLab.com reported these additional, notable findings:

Labels on some products included terms such as “pharmaceutical grade” and “tested in FDA approved laboratories,” which are meaningless as there is no basis for either claim.
A krill oil supplement that failed for both spoilage and low omega-3 levels claimed to be quality assured under GMPs (good manufacturing practices). Another “krill oil” supplement contained more fish oil than krill oil.
Most products met ConsumerLab.com’s strict contamination limit for dioxin-like PCBs of 3 picograms per gram (3 parts per trillion). However, one product (a pet supplement) slightly exceeded this limit with 3.14 picograms per gram. However, this exposure is still very small compared to that from fish meat — a small serving (3 ounces) of fatty fish such as salmon may easily provide 170 picograms of dl-PCBs as well as a significant amount of mercury. Trace amounts of dl-PCBs were found in all supplements, despite claims on some of being free of contaminants. There was no detectable mercury in any of the supplements.
The cost to obtain 100 mg of EPA and/or DHA from fish oil ranged from about 1 cent to 15 cents among fish oil supplements, and was about 30 cents from krill or algae oils. A fairly standard daily dose of 500 mg of EPA + DHA from a quality-approved product could be had for as little as 6 cents. Higher prices were not associated with higher quality.
Concentrations of EPA and DHA ranged from less than 20% to over 80% of the marine oil content listed on front labels — which is why consumers should specifically look for the amounts of EPA and DHA which typically appear on side labels.
“Supplements providing EPA and/or DHA are a great alternative to fish as a source of beneficial omega-3 fatty acids, as they typically have far fewer contaminants, cost less, and are more convenient to obtain. But products vary in quality, strength, odor-reduction, and price, so you need to choose carefully,” said Tod Cooperman, M.D., ConsumerLab.com’s president.

Consumption of EPA and DHA appears to reduce the risk of coronary heart disease and may be helpful in the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis, other inflammatory diseases, and psychiatric illness. EPA and DHA may also reduce the risk of certain cancers and macular degeneration. Fish oil supplements are given to pets to help maintain their coats and skin. U.S. sales of fish oil supplements in 2009 were 6 million, up 20% from the prior year, according to Nutrition Business Journal. A recent survey by ConsumerLab.com showed that fish oil had become the most commonly used supplement among people who regularly use supplements, exceeding, for the first time, the use of multivitamins. Seventy four percent of respondents reported using a fish oil supplement.

The new report includes test results, quality ratings, comparisons and reviews of products from the following brands: Advocare, CardioStat (Amerifit), Carlson, CVS, Dr. Sears, Finest Natural (Walgreen), Garden of Life, Kirkland (Costco), Life Extension, Liquid Solutions, Master Omega, Natrol, Natural Factors, Nature Made, New Chapter, Nordic Naturals, NOW, NSI (Vitacost), Olympian Labs, OmegaBrite, Origin (Target), PregnancyPlus, Puritan’s Pride, Quest Longevity (Canadian), Res-Q, Solgar, Source Naturals, Spring Valley (Walmart), Swanson, Trader Joe’s, The Simpsons, Vital Nutrients, VitalOils (VitalRemedyMD), Vitamin Shoppe, Vitamin World, Weil, Wellements, and 1-800-PetMeds. The report also includes information about dosing, side-effects, cautions, reduced-odor products, and proper storage of fish oil.

In addition to the products reviewed, two krill oil ingredients by Enzymotec USA have been tested and approved for quality through ConsumerLab.com’s Raw Materials Testing Program.

ConsumerLab.com is a leading provider of consumer information and independent evaluations of products that affect health and nutrition. The company is privately held and based in Westchester, New York. It has no ownership from, or interest in, companies that manufacture, distribute, or sell consumer products.
