Breast Ultrasounds Are a Comfortable and Convenient Option for Patients and Referring Doctors

Breast Ultrasounds Are a Comfortable and Convenient Option for Patients and Referring Doctors

Center For Diagnostic Imaging Miami

MIAMI, FL (PRWEB) September 30, 2014

Doctors often order breast ultrasounds as a follow-up, after a patient has received abnormal mammogram results. Most breast ultrasounds are done at a specialized medical imaging center, such as the Center for Diagnostic Imaging in Miami. The Center for Diagnostic Imaging is now offering breast ultrasounds to patients as an alternative to MRI. Most patients find ultrasounds to be more comfortable as they can be in an open space and do not have to remain perfectly still.

“We realize that receiving abnormal mammogram results that require additional testing can be a frightening and stressful process,” said Dr. Eric Godreau, M.D., of the Center for Diagnostic Imaging. “We try to make the imaging process as easy and painless as possible for patients, which is why we are offering ultrasounds as an alternative to MRIs. We also want patients to realize that having an ultrasound does not necessarily mean that cancer is present. However, the test is needed to provide further information about the area in question.”

A breast ultrasound can zero in on a specific area identified by the mammogram, and it can help shed more light on whether the area might be a cyst or solid mass. A breast ultrasound can also sometimes distinguish between benign and cancerous tumors and can help doctors determine whether steps such as a stereotactic breast biopsy are necessary.

As with any ultrasound, a breast ultrasound uses painless sound waves to create an image of an internal part of the body, without exposing the patient to radiation. Ultrasounds do not replace the use of mammograms for breast cancer screening, but should be used as a follow up test after an abnormal mammogram. Ultrasounds can also be good for identifying tumors in women who have dense breast tissue. In these cases, using ultrasound in conjunction with mammography can help doctors identify breast cancer more accurately than with mammograms alone.

Breast cancer is expected to impact one in eight women. For this reason, it is important to speak with your doctor right away if you are experiencing any symptoms or suspect you are at high risk for breast cancer. Early detection is an important factor in the success of treatment.

Integrative Medicine Plays Important Role in Treatment, Quality of Life for Brain Tumor Patients

Integrative Medicine Plays Important Role in Treatment, Quality of Life for Brain Tumor Patients

Chicago, IL (PRWEB) July 01, 2014

Integrative medicine — a combination of both alternative medicine and conventional treatments — may improve quality of life for brain tumor patients. At the American Brain Tumor Association’s annual patient and family conference July 25-26 in Chicago, experts will discuss the use of integrative medicine and how patients and caregivers can talk with their doctors about integrating alternative treatment options.

In the US, recent studies show that 50 to 60 percent of cancer patients use some form of integrative medicine. According to Deneen Hesser, MSHSA, RN, OCN, chief mission officer for the ABTA. “Some of these therapies may be helpful; others could be harmful or interfere with the effectiveness of other therapies. This conference session offers patients and caregivers access to experts who can give them the information they need make informed decisions.”

Rekha Chaudhary, MD, assistant professor of medicine at the University of Cincinnati Neuroscience Institute, will be presenting the session “Integrative Medicine and Nutrition During Treatment.” The session will focus on the overall nutrition, special diets including the ketogenic diet, exercise and more.

“It’s important to understand that integrative medicine is in addition to, or in conjunction with, traditional medicine as opposed to alternative medicine which practices are used instead of traditional treatments,” explains Dr. Chaudhary. “Integrative medicine can be part of the healing process by aiding symptom management and promoting health and healing. It should be discussed with your doctor when planning your chemotherapy, radiation or surgery.”

The ABTA recommends that patients considering supplementing traditional treatments with alternative therapies do so under the supervision of their doctors/treatment teams to safely and effectively enhance health and healing. The ABTA encourages patients and caregivers to research the credentials of the person presenting alternative therapies to help determine whether it is a valid option. In addition to talking with their doctor, questions to consider include:

Is he/she licensed? (Not all states require licensing or certification of alternative medicine practitioners.)
What kind of organization does he/she represent? (A business? A college or university? A nonprofit organization?)
         What is his/her educational background?
What are his/her professional society affiliations?

ABOUT THE ABTA PATIENT AND FAMILY CONFERENCE

The American Brain Tumor Association’s conference annually brings together brain tumor experts, researchers, patients, families and caregivers with the goal of improving the lives of people living with a brain tumor. This year’s theme, “Providing and Pursing Answers: Advances in Research, Treatment and Care” describes the ABTA’s position as a leader in providing and pursuing the answers that brain tumor patients and their families seek.

Throughout the conference, national brain tumor experts will cover a wide variety of topics not only on new research and treatments, but also on important quality of life issues, including integrative medicine – a topic the ABTA is often asked about.

The ABTA’s 2014 patient and family conference will take place on July 25-26 at the Renaissance Chicago O’Hare Suites Hotel, just minutes away from Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport. To learn more or register, visit http://www.braintumorconference.org.

Dr. Connie Casad Brews Coffee to Help Patients “Bullet Proof” Their Brains

Dr. Connie Casad Brews Coffee to Help Patients “Bullet Proof” Their Brains

Dallas, TX (PRWEB) April 21, 2014

Dallas physician Dr. Connie Casad, a well-known and respected gynecologist, is offering her patients a healthier option for coffee.

“Since millions of Americans, including my patients, fire up their engines with coffee in the morning, we have developed a plan to help them put premium in the tank instead of the regular old coffee they are used to,” she explained. “Bullet Proof Coffee, a relatively new beverage option, can actually improve brain function and health. To better educate our patients, we carry Bullet Proof in our office.”

When asked about this unique strategy, Dr. Casad replied, “Medical science and technology are evolving and as physicians, we must stay focused and current on new products that have the potential to enhance our patient’s health. As recently as ten years ago, health and fitness advocates still believed that manufactured fats, if you were going to have any fats at all, were the healthiest way to manage your diet,” she added. “Since fats are an essential part of human health, especially brain health, we now know that natural fats like those from certain butters are actually good for us, a much better health choice than what we have been told for a long time. I strive to help my patients improve their health and wellness with innovative ideas like making better coffee in the morning.”

But how can coffee matter? Dr. Casad learned about a California entrepreneur who had sold his business, and with time on his hands, realized he was not in good health. He decided a lifestyle change was in order. During his trip in Tibet, he was given hot tea with Yak butter. The monks knew that the natural fats in butter made them feel better and their minds sharper.

The businessman used his experience in Tibet to launch his investigation of the broader study of his own health. He was allergic to molds and the associated mycotoxins they produce, and these can be found in most coffees. He created a coffee product that has vastly reduced these mycotoxins and still tastes great. Furthermore, he has developed recipes that, although unusual, have been shown to be helpful in jumpstarting brain activity in the morning with more than just the caffeine in the average cup of coffee.

“Because many of my patients have similar issues and could benefit from less molds and mycotoxins present in most coffee products, I wanted to offer this alternative,” said Dr. Casad. “By providing access to Bullet Proof Coffee in my office, I can observe for myself how my patients benefit by making this change in their lifestyle.”

When asked why she developed this approach to patient service, Dr. Casad explained, “When I turned 50 myself, I grew tired of my own doctors telling me there was nothing I could do to improve my overall health and slow down the process of aging. I made it my personal goal to educate myself in all aspects of human health and how things like hormones, diet, exercise, sleep, medicine, nutritional supplements, and even the environment work in concert to influence the wellness and performance of the human body. No single approach can improve health and no single approach is right for every individual person. My practice focuses on individualized personal care. Understanding the big picture helps my patients improve how they feel and helps them get their lives back. I am always searching for ways to assist them.”

OrthoCarolina Partners with HydroWorx Once Again to Offer Patients and Community Advanced Aquatic Therapy Options

OrthoCarolina Partners with HydroWorx Once Again to Offer Patients and Community Advanced Aquatic Therapy Options

HydroWorx InstaFit Pool at OrthoCarolina

Middletown, PA (PRWEB) April 16, 2014

At OrthoCarolina, aquatic therapy has become such a driving force that they sometimes have difficulty getting every patient in their pool. Unlike a traditional pool found at a health club, their particular unit is specially equipped with an underwater treadmill, massage hose capabilities, resistance therapy jets and underwater video. These advanced technologies allow their physical therapists and specialists to provide innovative healing, which was becoming somewhat of a double-edged sword before the company decided to invest in a second HydroWorx therapy pool which they installed at one of their facilities several miles away.

“We’ve had so much success, but it can be difficult to keep up with the demand,” admits Cheryl Bennett, PTA. “Having another therapy pool allows us to offer more for patients who want and need aquatic therapy. That’s a huge group, too; so many people need this kind of avenue to transition safely to land-based physical therapies. Without aquatic therapy, many patients would fall off the schedule or have tremendous difficulty getting over the initial ‘hump’ of therapy. With the pool, we can get them headed in the right direction from day one.”

Their second therapy pool is located at the north end of their city, a more convenient drive for former and current OrthoCarolina patients who do not wish to navigate significant traffic to enjoy their aquatic therapy and exercises. In the past, some OrthoCarolina patients tried to continue their progress in the pool at local gyms, but those pools’ cooler temperatures and more generalized programs led them to become frustrated with the experience. Having a warm-water HydroWorx pool located closer to their homes now enables them to enjoy all that aquatics has to offer.

Aquatic therapy isn’t new in terms of humankind. Civilizations around the globe have turned to the healing powers of water for millennia, from the public baths of Rome to the hot spring spas across northern Europe. However, with equipment like the HydroWorx pools, the natural properties of water such as buoyancy and hydrostatic pressure can be even more precisely and deliberately harnessed. This is a boon for those with foot and ankle problems, chronic pain, back problems, arthritis, MS and more.

Fitness advocates like Dr. Robert McBride, who practices with OrthoCarolina, appreciate being able to get patients on a fast-track aquatic therapy program very soon, even days after surgery. Whereas patients in similar situations would be forced to wait until they could comfortably handle land-based physical therapy, they are now able to reap the advantages because in the pool, their weight is countered by up to 80 percent.

Duane Albers, PT, Director of Physical and Hand Therapy, OrthoCarolina notes, “The pool continues to be very successful for our patient population and for many of our patients. It allows us to initiate therapy earlier following their injury which in turn helps to regain function sooner and pose less long term complications. Additionally, for those patients who are limited in WB or who may be challenged by land based exercises it allows us to make functional progressions in the pool to carry over to a land based program. The decision to add a second pool was highly supported by our physician leadership in order to provide a high level of care in multiple locations to meet the growing needs and convenience of our patients.”

The new therapy pool is much like the first that OrthoCarolina purchased from HydoWorx. Located on the first floor of the north end facility, it has become a veritable magnet for those seeking the proven benefits of regular aquatics. Its success is definitely in the numbers: Between its inception in November 2013 and March 2014, its use time by patients suffering from foot and ankle, low back pain, hip pain and knee pain has quadrupled and continues to grow.

Because OrthoCarolina is an official partner of University of North Carolina at Charlotte, their personnel see many UNCC students who require aquatic therapy. Yet their options span a wide range of ages and abilities. Explains Elizabeth Nichols, PT, ATC, “The programs are based upon each patient: what they did before, what their expectations are, etc. We have an adult population that ranges from 25 to 91 years old! One patient had pain in her left hip. She’s been going to the gym as part of the Silver Sneakers program, but her gym doesn’t have a pool. We’re now transitioning her to a pool program and she loves it. She was so shocked after the first two visits to OrthoCarolina that she didn’t have hip pain following her pool therapy!”

OrthoCarolina’s pools are not open to the general public at this point. Nonetheless, those in the Charlotte, North Carolina area who require physical therapy are encouraged to discuss the advantages of aquatic therapy treatments with their referring physicians.

Main Street Dental Team Warns Patients to Avoid Damaging Dental Habits This Holiday Season

Main Street Dental Team Warns Patients to Avoid Damaging Dental Habits This Holiday Season

Main Street Dental Team Warns Patients to Avoid Damaging Dental Habits This Holiday Season

Toronto, Canada (PRWEB) December 20, 2013

Main Street Dental Team (MainStreetDentalTeam.com), Unionville’s first full-time dental clinic, is warning patients to avoid common self-inflicted damaging dental habits this holiday season and providing its top tips for avoiding an emergency dental visit.

“Aside from making a great first impression, our teeth are designed for chewing. Using them for anything besides that can result in extensive dental damage,” says Dr. Harvey Schwartz, owner of Main Street Dental Team. “But, especially around this time of year: we’ve all used our teeth to tear tape, open bags of candy, and even open bottles.”

According to the latest research, the total expenditure on dental services in Canada was almost .0 billion in 2010; per capita spending on dental services that year was 0.83. That number could soar if someone chips or breaks their tooth or damages their gums. (Source: “Dental Health Services in Canada Facts and Figures 2010,” University of Ottawa Faculty of Medicine web site; http://www.med.uottawa.ca/sim/data/Dental/Dental_Health_Services_in_Canada_June_2010.pdf, last accessed December 19, 2013.)

“Sometimes we’re our own worst enemies, engaging in habits or making impulsive decisions that we end up suffering for,” Dr. Schwartz adds. “For example, our teeth are not designed to be used as tools. It takes a lot longer for an injury to heal and or a tooth to be repaired than it does to find the proper tool in the first place.”

It’s not uncommon around the holiday season to enjoy a glass of hot apple cider or hot foods at an office or holiday party. Unfortunately, enjoying a hot pizza or drink too quickly can burn the inside of the mouth and damage both the roof of the mouth and the gums. Dr. Schwartz advises those that do burn their mouth from pizza or any other overly hot food or drink should place ice or cold water against the burn as quickly as possible to avoid further damage and avoid hot and spicy foods and drinks until the burn heals.

“At the same time, it’s important to remember that chewing on ice can cause fracture lines, chips, and cracks in teeth. Chewing ice can also wear down the enamel, which can lead to further cavities,” he observes. “Teeth may be strong, but they’re still prone to damage.”

When people feel pain in a tooth, it’s not uncommon for some to place an aspirin tablet in their cheek beside the tooth; believing that the pain-relieving properties will be absorbed more quickly than swallowing it. But as Dr. Schwartz explains the fact of the matter is that aspirin should be swallowed. In addition, direct aspirin-to-tooth contact can lead to a secondary issue: aspirin burn. This occurs when the acid in the aspirin burns a white, rough lesion into the gums or cheek.

“What some people fail to recognize is that good oral health is integral to our general overall physical well-being,” he notes. “Untreated cavities are not just painful; they can also lead to serious infections. There is also mounting clinical evidence that shows a direct correlation between poor oral health and a higher incidence of diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and even Alzheimer’s.” (Source: “Putting Our Money Where Our Mouth Is: The Future of Dental Care in Canada,” Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives web site, April 2011; http://www.policyalternatives.ca/sites/default/files/uploads/publications/National%20Office/2011/04/Putting%20our%20money%20where%20our%20mouth%20is.pdf.)

“Granted, it’s impossible to anticipate all dental injuries or accidents, but being aware of daily habits is a good way to help reduce the amount of issues we all have to deal with,” Dr. Schwartz concludes. “Should anyone experience a dental problem or oral irritation over the holidays, they should contact a dentist right away. At Main Street Dental Team, existing or new clients can call and book an emergency dental appointment at any point over the holiday season.”

The Main Street Dental Team was established in 1967 and became the first full-time dental practice in the community. Main Street Dental Team provides a full range of dental services for children to seniors, including preventive dentistry, restorative/cosmetic dentistry, ultimate smile makeovers, dental implants, surgery, full and partial dentures, and treatment for gum disease. To better serve the needs of Unionville’s growing population, their staff also speaks Mandarin and Cantonese.
