Chicago Improv Festival Set to Warm Up Chicago With LOL Comedy
Chicago Improv Festival Set to Warm Up Chicago With LOL Comedy
Chicago (PRWEB) March 19, 2014
Laughter is the best medicine, which means the 17th annual Chicago Improv Festival from March 31 to April 6, 2014, promises to remedy Chicago’s winter blues. The biggest comedy fest ever in the city of Chicago, this year’s fest is jammed packed with more than 200 acts from all over the world – from New Zealand to Los Angeles and places in between – at 21 intimate venues, where audience members are sure to be rolling on the floor laughing.
Under the guidance of Artistic Director Kevin Mullaney, Chicago Improv Festival honors the art of improv—in its many forms—and the city’s burgeoning improv community by showcasing the crème de la crème of improvisers from around the globe. Artistic improv categories featured at the fest will include: Long Form, Short Form, Emerging Artists, Musical, Dramatic, Experimental, Alternative, Genre, Puppetry, Latino and Open Stage.
A motherload of humor compressed into one hilarious week, headlining the 17th annual Chicago Improv Fest will be:
ASSSSCat featuring Upright Citizen’s Brigade founding fathers Matt Besser (Walk Hard: Dewey Cox), Ian Roberts (Comedy Central’s Key & Peele) and Matt Walsh (HBO’s Veep) with special guests Tim Meadows (NBC’s Saturday Night Live) and Betsy Sodaro (Monster University);
Horatio Sanz (NBC’s Saturday Night Live) & The All-Stars of Comedy;
Trainwreck featuring Dan Bakkedahl (FX’s Legit) & Ed Furman;
Maribeth Monroe (Comedy Central’s Workaholics) & Andy Cobb;
Jet Eveleth & Paul Brittain (NBC’s Saturday Night Live); and
Sheldon featuring Jon Barinholtz (Marvel’s Captain America 2) & Rob Belushi (Spike TV’s Joe Schmo Show).
To help attendees “Choose Your Own Improv Adventure,” a new handy mobile app called Chicago Improv Festival is available for Android and iPhone users. The app features a full fest calendar, details about each show, directions to venues, where to park and, most important, the functionality to buy tickets. App users also will have opportunities to win tickets to improv shows and other prizes with a QR code contest at each venue.
“With 11 artistic categories, the 17th annual Chicago Improv Fest has something for everyone. This year, we are introducing a new category, Dramatic Improv, in addition to bringing back avant-garde categories like Genre, Experimental and Emerging Artists. And, our new mobile app will make it super easy for fans to find the shows they want to see—so get out and laugh, Chicago!” says Chicago Improv Festival Executive Producer Jonathan Pitts.
The fest will kick off on Monday, March 31 with an Opening Night showcase themed The Best of Chicago Improv. A rare treat, two of the most successful examples of Long Form improv in Chicago, Baby Wants Candy and The Improvised Shakespeare Company, will share the stage. Also on the lineup will be The Boys, featuring a killer cast of Chicago’s most adored performers and teachers, for an epic Chicago-style improv jam.
In addition to featuring the best improvisers from Chicago and cities across the U.S., the fest offers fans a rare opportunity to see international improv acts from nine countries, including:
Cia de Teatro Contemporâneo: CABARET IMPROTEMPO from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil;
Fake Cops from Toronto, Canada;
The Improv Bandits from Auckland, New Zealand;
Impro Brasil: Operation Chicago from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil;
Klancyk: Twisted personalities (Zaburzone Osobowości) from Warsaw, Poland;
Teatribù: The Stereotypes from Milano, Italy; and
We’re From Here from Toronto, Canada.
“The introduction of artistic categories centered at their own venues worked even better than we had hoped last year as strong crowds came out for nearly every show. This year, we’re excited about presenting an even bigger festival, with more performers, more audiences and more laughs than ever before. We hope Chicagoans enjoy choosing their own improv adventure as much as we did in creating it for them,” says Chicago Improv Festival Artistic Director Kevin Mullaney.
