NJIT’s Newark College of Engineering Announces Honorees for 16th Annual Salute to Excellence

Newark, NJ (PRWEB) February 26, 2014

The Newark College of Engineering (NCE) at New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT) will host the 16th annual Salute to Engineering Excellence on March 27, 2014 in the Campus Center Atrium. Proceeds from the event will benefit the NCE Board of Visitors Endowed Scholarship Fund and the NCE Dean’s Fund.

“NCE has a long tradition of educating some of the best engineers of the future, giving them hands-on experiences along the way,” said Interim Dean Basil C. Baltzis. “We are proud of all our students and alumni as we see them overcoming a number of obstacles, completing their education, and embarking on very productive careers.”

The 2014 NCE Outstanding Alumnus Award will be presented to Donald Cronin ’75, PCMH, President of Alternative Technologies, Inc., and Edward J. Schmeltz ‘71, PE, Senior Vice President and Director of Maritime and Special Projects at AECOM Technology Corporation.

Donald Cronin, of Long Valley, N.J., has over 35 years of experience in the analysis, design, integration and implementation of materials handling, material flow and inventory control systems for many of the world’s largest and most prestigious companies in a wide variety of industries. He also is involved in a number of professional organizations including serving as President and Chairman of the Board for the Warehouse Education & Research Council-NY/NJ/CT; Board Member and Past President of the Materials Handling Society of New Jersey as well as the MHSNJ Scholarship Chairman for the Annual Fund Raising Scholarship Golf Outing, which benefits NJIT and Rutgers; and a Member of the Materials Handling & Management Society.

Edward J. Schmeltz, of Riverside, Conn., is one of the finest and most accomplished marine civil engineers in the industry today. He has been the designer for some of the world’s truly iconic and leading-edge projects: the Pier 400 Development at the Port of Los Angeles, one of the largest landfill projects ever undertaken; the Breakwater Reconstruction for the Port of Sines in Portugal, one of the world’s largest; and a tender design for the third set of locks on the Panama Canal are but three of his outstanding accomplishments.

Each year, NCE recognizes an outstanding industry partner for their uniquely supportive relationship with NJIT. Langan Engineering & Environmental Services will receive the 2014 Outstanding Industry Partnership Award. Founded in 1970 and headquartered in Elmwood Park, N.J., Langan provides integrated site engineering and environmental consulting services for private developers, property owners, and public sector clients. Langan employs more than 800 professionals including nearly 50 NJIT graduates. The firm ranks among the top Green Design Firms by Engineering News-Record and has consistently ranked among the Best Engineering Firms to Work For by CE News.

“NJIT is synonymous with academic excellence in the engineering field and we at Langan are proud to be recognized as their partner,” said David T. Gockel, Langan President/CEO and an NJIT alumnus. “We look forward to continuing our alliance with the school as it plays a critical role in shaping future industry professionals.” Gockel serves on NJIT’s Board of Overseers.

Langan and NJIT recently strengthened their alliance with a collaborative research agreement. Langan Vice President Stewart Abrams and NJIT Professor of Environmental Engineering Michel Boufadel direct Langan’s Remediation Technology Program at NJIT’s Center of Natural Resources Development & Protection. Together, Langan and NJIT have been performing joint-applied research on clean-up technologies for various Langan Fortune 500 and private site development clients achieving a degree of quality and control not available if this work was subcontracted.

Cronin and Schmeltz will join the ranks of accomplished alumni who have been honored by NCE for their achievements. In 2013, Hatch Mott MacDonald Vice President Joseph G. Stanley, PE, PP ’78, ‘85, of Morristown, N.J., and American Society of Civil Engineers Executive Director Patrick Natale, PE ’70, ’75, of Flemington, N.J., received the NCE Outstanding Alumnus Award. Stanley also serves as President of the NJIT Alumni Association.

In addition to alumni, awards will be presented to notable NCE faculty, staff and students. Each year, student teams including the Steel Bridge Team and the Concrete Canoe Team display their competition entries at the event. In spring 2013, the Steel Bridge Team won the regional competition for the seventh consecutive year while the Concrete Canoe Team paddled to victory in an equally exciting metropolitan contest, placing first for design, lightness, efficiency and economy, as well as first-place overall.
