Vitamin D’s Role In Preventing “Leaky Gut”

Research has proven that Vitamin D deficiency leads to a comprised mucosal barrier in the intestines, which in turn leads to intestinal dysbiosis “leaky gut”. Vitamin D is needed to close the epithelial lining tight junctions in the mucosal barrier in order for the immune system to function well, along with a good probiotics. If the mucosal junctions are not tight, molecules can cross through the barrier and move into the blood stream. This sets up the inflammatory reaction in the body.

Vitamin D plays a critical role in modulating the immune system and down-regulating inflammation. Inflammation is caused when there is an injury or foreign hazard on or in the body. The immune system relies heavily on Vitamin D to help calm inflammation by regulating T cells and cytokines.
